America is on her knees. All the modern conveniences that her citizens simply couldn't live without have been stripped away. Very basic survival skills, that people couldn't imagine they would ever need, are long lost, forgotten for generations, exchanged for easy, pain-free living, supported by technology and pharmacological aid. But the easy living is gone in an instant. Stores are picked clean. Automated systems that provided food to millions have gone dark. Hordes of starving Americans trek on foot toward the central states, America's breadbasket, where everything was supposedly produced. Across the middle states they find that the automated irrigation and farming systems have also failed. The fields are dead. The herds of cattle the starving hordes expect to find have long since been replaced by factories producing synthetic blood proteins resembling beef, poultry, and pork. The protein factories have also gone dark and are filled with vats of rotting, inedible sludge.
Draconian green laws that banned fireplaces, gas appliances, internal combustion engines, firearms, and even battery backups for solar systems, have left America's citizens huddled in the dark, cold, and starving, while the rest of the world ignores the fate of this hated bully, the crippled relic of the great nation that it once was. But the world can't turn a blind eye. Allowing mass starvation violates international law. There is only one solution the civilized world can agree upon: humanitarian euthanasia.
A few thousand stragglers stayed behind on Long Island after the mass exodus, to scavenge what they could... until the humanitarians come for them too.
