Before scripture, before kingdoms, before borders, humanity remembered.
The First People understood themselves not as rulers of Earth, but as part of her. They knew Wisdom as Sophia, the living presence woven through creation, memory, birth, death, relationship, and the questions humans dared to ask. There was no distance between the sacred and the ordinary. The Earth was not property. Knowledge was not sin. Woman was not lesser. And no one needed permission to seek the divine.
Then the visitors came.
The N'Kali arrive as travelers from an advanced civilization convinced that powerful societies have a responsibility to guide younger worlds. The M'Butu come with a different philosophy: order must prevail over uncertainty, and unstable civilizations must be brought under control. Between them stands Khem, an N'Kali traveler whose encounter with the First People forces him to question everything he has been taught about progress, ownership, civilization, and the right of one people to decide the future of another.
As generations pass, humanity begins to forget.
Leadership becomes hierarchy. Land becomes property. Authority rises above relationship. The sacred moves upward into the heavens while Earth is pushed beneath humanity's feet. The feminine is diminished. The serpent, once a symbol of transformation and renewal, becomes associated with deception. Curiosity becomes disobedience. Knowledge becomes dangerous. Stories become laws. Laws become doctrine. And eventually, written words begin carrying more authority than the people and memories that created them.
Yet the inversion is never complete.
Sophia survives in fragments.
She remains in women who question. In healers who admit what they do not know. In children who continue asking why. In dreams, songs, old stories, forbidden teachings, and the quiet rhythm the First People once knew as the Mother's Heart.
And Khem begins to understand something neither the N'Kali nor the M'Butu expected: humanity's greatest danger may not be conquest from beyond the stars, but the moment humans begin enforcing the conqueror's ideas upon themselves.
Blending speculative fiction, ancient myth, spiritual philosophy, and alternate history, The First Remembering is the opening volume of The Great Inversion Trilogy, a story about memory, power, freedom, colonization, belief, and the uncomfortable possibility that humanity's oldest truths were never destroyed.
They were rearranged.
And somewhere beneath everything humanity has been taught lies a question powerful enough to unsettle gods, empires, and civilizations alike:
Who gave us the right?
