Across 101 castles, fortresses, châteaux, royal strongholds, and ruins, writer and traveler Sarah Melland follows centuries of murder, betrayal, imprisonment, execution, warfare, witch trials, scandal, doomed love, political intrigue, and unexplained encounters to discover not only why these places became haunted, but why their stories have survived.
These are not fictional Gothic settings. They are real places, many of which can still be entered, toured, photographed, explored, and in some cases even slept in.
