Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have hated each other for a century. In 1943, the war forced them to share a football team.
When World War II drained the NFL's rosters, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles - bitter rivals who had spent a decade trying to beat each other - were ordered to merge for one season or fold entirely. The result was the Phil-Pitt Combine, quickly dubbed the Steagles by a Pittsburgh sportswriter who meant it as a joke.

Nobody expected much. The Philadelphia Inquirer predicted two wins. The players were factory workers, 4-F draftees, and castoffs - men turned away by their country for flat feet, bad knees, and failing eyesight, who worked forty-hour shifts in defense plants before suiting up on Sunday afternoons. Their coaches despised each other. Their cities despised each other.

They went 5-4-1. It was the first winning season in Eagles franchise history.

One Season is the story of how twenty-two improbable men - blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, thirty-four years old and complaining about their chin straps - became something neither city expected and both cities needed. Set against the backdrop of wartime America, it is a novel about what happens when the wrong people refuse to be the wrong people.
