Hinterland is the third book by the secretive and mysterious poet Birdland Slim. The book chronicles the poet's life between
October 1999 - February 2000 at the turn of the millennium. Separation is a major theme of the work. Separation from family
and the sad passing of family members, which is the final separation are prominent ideas in the book. The poet also deals with his addictions and the consequences of such behavior. There is also some humorous poems about the author where the poet tries to write his own biography with stories though not true are in some way telling the truth of his life. As the millennium changes the poet reveals his sadness and loneliness when parted from his family. The book doesn't have a happy ending but continues in sadness but this is a part of life and the poet sees sadness and separation as a part of life be it long or short duration. What is life without sadness and grief. The book overall tells the story of the poets sadness and his continued desire to survive and see a better future.
