Drawing on Zacharias's own statements, interrogations and testimonies, given before the courts of Leeuwarden, Amsterdam, The Hague, Delft, Leiden, Haarlem and Utrecht, author Gerrit Jan Wielinga has pieced together the love and sex life of Zacharias Wilsma and held it up to the light. Richly filling in the background and the gaps in the story, he draws a psychologically coherent portrait of 'the simple servant who turned the Dutch Republic on its head'. Gerrit Jan Wielinga (b. 1971, Leeuwarden) is a writer, artist and campaigner. He devised Purple Friday, the Netherlands' national day of LGBTQ+ solidarity in schools, and is a co-founder of Bi+ Nederland. Previously he worked as a barman in Amsterdam's gay bars and acted in seedy German porn films. Today he lives with his cat on an island in Amsterdam. He writes for several publications. Previous novels: Shadowland, The digital version of my brain is one big grey hole and Moon in Aries. Moon in Aries can be seen as a precursor to Zacharias, the Frisian Stallion. In that book Wielinga tries to get an insight into Zacharias Wilsma's life through research and his own personal history.
