Do you know a child with boundless imagination, a love of discovery, and a curiosity about things off the beaten path?
You Found It is an illustrated book of poems for kids and their grown-ups to explore. It's a modern answer to Shel Silverstein's beloved Where the Sidewalk Ends, delivered with an extra dose of adventure and layered with intentional pedagogical elements to help pre, emerging, and blossoming young readers and writers.
Each section in You Found It presents opportunities for children of varied age groups (from toddlers to teens) to engage with language in a way that is fresh and fun, while being introduced to new words that will spark creativity and conversation. The book is designed for children to rediscover several times over the course of their development, with something new and meaningful to be taken away each time.
You Found It has three sections:
Section1: Poems for the Uncanny
Poems & pictures packed with silliness, strangeness, and love. The (mostly) humorous poems in this section have rhythms and rhymes that make them a blast to read, and each poem has an accompanying illustration.
Section 2: Poems from Nymora
Poems and illustrations set in Nymora--a world of forest covered mountains, ancient ruins, and gleaming limestone cities. In Nymora, some children develop rare and powerful magical abilities. These kids must navigate a dangerous world that simultaneously shuns and needs them, and these poems offer vivid glimpses into their adventures.
Section 3: Spells and Forms
This section includes seven form poems, including: Villanelle, Sonnet, Acrostic, Triolet, Limerick, Ghazal, and Haiku. Along with examples, there are recipes on how to write your own. Additionally, readers are challenged to find the unidentified form poems embedded in the book's earlier sections (there's one of each form!).
You Found It incorporates several educational elements to support growing readers and writers. These include bolded vocabulary words with simple definitions, increased font sizes, especially on shorter poems, context clues, and 'how-to' guides. Children (and their grown-up reading buddies) will treasure this book, learn from it, and come back to it time and time again.
