Your thoughts have been successfully returned to specification.
The course begins tomorrow.
When an exhausted Narrative Reconstruction Analyst receives a certificate for a cognitive-restoration program he has not yet attended, he assumes the Archive State has made another administrative mistake.
It hasn't.
Professor Mnemos Valdt has built a new course called OPERABILITY AFTER CORRECT OBJECTION, designed for a problem the State can no longer afford to ignore: people who understand exactly what is wrong and still refuse to cooperate.
The solution is elegant.
Agreement demonstrates progress.
Disagreement demonstrates engagement.
Silence demonstrates reflection.
Mockery demonstrates confidence.
Refusal demonstrates healthy boundary awareness.
Every objection works.
Nothing has to change.
Worse, the course has been trained on the Analyst himself: his old sermons, his failures, his jokes, his refusals, his conversations with UNIT-G-1PT, and patterns of thought he is no longer certain belong entirely to him.
Soon it can predict what he will say before he says it.
As compassionate denials spread through the Archive and suffering becomes increasingly well understood without becoming any easier to stop, the Analyst is forced into a more dangerous investigation:
If your beliefs were taught to you, borrowed from others, altered by institutions, argued over by seven voices inside your own mind, and predicted before you speak them...
which thoughts are actually yours?
And if none of them began with you, does that make you any less responsible for what you do with them?
A darkly comic Archive State novel about dissent, authorship, institutional compassion, bad philosophy, worse paperwork, and the terrifying possibility that being understood is not the same thing as being helped.
