This volume anthologizes and showcases Uruguayan writer Laura Chalar's work as a translator over many years. Working with poems in her mother tongue, Spanish, as well as in French, Italian and Portuguese, Chalar has produced a unique output that brings a whole universe of voices -many of them practically unknown in English- to the English-language reader. This varied and striking body of translations helps to remind us that, in the words of Peruvian novelist Ciro AlegrÃa, the world is wide and foreign - and often joyfully so. [Chalar's] heart is full of the words of the poets translated here, thirty-four of them, and we share her joy as we read. I had the sense that I was being shown a treasured private collection by the translator.
-Brian Daldorph, editor of Coal City Review,
author of Words is a Powerful Thing,
Kansas Poems and Ice Age Reading the aptly titled Your Hundredfold Voice had me scribbling 'So' so many times. So much of our human existence covered, from the fingertip intimate, innermost thoughts and qualms, to the very grandeur, exaltation of each of our existences. Laura has gathered here so many of her translations from so many countries, continents even, from so many periods in so many styles, in so many formats, enough surely to suit anyone's taste. Some poems I greeted like old friends, and some I wished I'd met before. So many lines to savor and love, concepts to consider, so many ways of looking at this world of ours, these lives of ours. All told, Your Hundredfold Voice is one remarkable achievement.
-Sam Smith, editor of The Journal,
author of The Complete Pieces
and Mirror Mirror: In the Geography of the Head
