The book York Plays: The Plays Performed By The Crafts Or Mysteries Of York On The Day Of Corpus Christi by Lucy Toulmin Smith is a comprehensive collection of medieval religious plays that were performed in the city of York on the feast day of Corpus Christi. The plays, also known as the York Mystery Plays, were performed by the various craft guilds or mysteries of the city, and depict scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. The book includes the full text of the plays, which have been translated from their original Middle English into modern English for ease of reading. Each play is accompanied by an introduction that provides historical and cultural context, as well as notes on the text and its performance. The plays were performed on wagons or stages that were moved through the streets of York, with each guild responsible for a different part of the production, including costumes, props, and music. The plays were a popular form of entertainment and religious instruction in the medieval period, and this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the culture and beliefs of the time. Overall, York Plays: The Plays Performed By The Crafts Or Mysteries Of York On The Day Of Corpus Christi is a valuable resource for scholars of medieval literature and history, as well as anyone interested in the history of theatre and religious performance. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
