The cross was removed, but the machinery remained.
The road still judged the mountain. The border still judged the family. The clock still judged the worker. The category still judged the child. The throne still called itself government after it had abandoned every obligation that made government real.
The names survived.
Their meanings did not.
They called submission loyalty. They called fear harmony. They called isolation freedom. They called measurement truth. They called conquest order. They called spiritual death common sense.
Then the dead began speaking again.
Through the character. Through the brush. Through the ancestor remembered in the hand of the child. Through the minister who corrected a ruler twelve centuries after his own execution. Through the line that carried mountain into river, river into grain, grain into village, village into memory, and memory into those not yet born.
The throne gives a man a seat. It does not give him the meaning of 君.
The institution gives itself a title. It does not make the title true.
The flag gives the people a visible form. The people's conduct gives the flag a world.
They called anime childish until its symbols entered the streets. They called the drawn line unreal until a fictional flag became more truthful than the governments it opposed. Indonesia raised it. Nepal carried it to the gates. India, France, Mexico, the United States, and people across the world recognized themselves beneath the same grinning skull.
Different nations.
Different wounds.
Different languages.
The same Living Line.
This is not a request for admission into the galleries of the dead. It is not an appeal to Hollywood, Disney, the museum, the university, the bureaucracy, or the throne. They had their opportunity to recognize life before profitability made recognition safe.
Too late.
The dead institution will be placed beside the name it claims. Its conduct will testify. Its victims will speak. Its descendants will judge. Whatever cannot bear the meaning of justice will lose the name justice. Whatever cannot bear the obligations of government will lose the name government. Whatever cannot carry the living will be mourned, buried, and denied the right to rule the future.
The Book of Blood named what was crucified.
The Book of Life names what survived.
The dead believed history belonged to those who controlled the record.
They forgot that a single line can carry the entire universe.
Yeah...
It's about time.
