This is not a beginner Spanish book. Your child is not a beginner. They hear Spanish every day, they follow every conversation, they get the jokes. And then they pick up a pencil and stop, because nobody ever taught them where the h goes.
That combination is extremely common and it almost never has a book of its own. Beginner materials teach vocabulary they already own. Native-speaker materials assume a schooling in Spanish they never had.
THE SPANISH IS ON TOP. THE ENGLISH IS THE CRUTCH.
In these pages Spanish is the main language, printed large, on the upper line. English sits underneath in small grey type - there if you need it, easy to cover with a finger, and not the reason the page exists. Sentence 9 in Spanish is sentence 9 in English, in all sixteen stories.
IT IS NOT THIRTY RULES. IT IS FOURTEEN.
- b and v sound identical - and four hints tell you which one to write
- c, s and z make one sound in Latin America - and the plural of a word tells you which letter it is
- g, j, gue, gui and the two dots on the ü
- the silent h, at the start of a word and in the middle of one
- ll and y, and the difference between pero and perro
- m before p and b, n before c, d and t
- the three stress rules, and the one accent mark that fixes the exceptions

SIXTEEN STORIES ABOUT THIS EXACT SITUATION
A girl who has said her grandmother's name a thousand times and never written it once. A boy who reads the market list by guessing from the first letter, until the day the soup is wrong. A certificate that lost its ñ because of an old printer and one question nobody had asked in years. A tune the family has hummed for three generations, and the child who finally writes words for it.
WHAT IS INSIDE

WHAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT DO
It will not tell your child they should already know this. Not on any page. Not knowing how to write a language you speak at home is not anyone's fault - speaking and writing are taught in different places, and plenty of people only got the first one.
It also has no illustrations. The space a picture would take is taken by the second language instead. If your child needs pictures to stay with a page, this is the wrong book, and we would rather say so here.
The Spanish is neutral Latin American Spanish, which is a printing decision and not an opinion about which way is correct. Your family will say several of these words differently, and your family is right; the book says so on page 16 and asks you to say it out loud.
