Within The Gates is a novel written by Elizabeth Ward. The story revolves around a young girl named Ruth who is orphaned and sent to live with her distant relatives in a small town. Ruth struggles to fit in with her new family and the community, but finds solace in the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. As she grows older, she becomes increasingly aware of the social and economic inequalities that exist in the town, particularly between the wealthy landowners and the poor farmers who work their land. Ruth becomes involved in a local movement to improve the lives of the farmers, and finds herself torn between her loyalty to her family and her desire to fight for justice. The novel explores themes of class, gender, and social justice, and offers a poignant portrayal of rural life in early 20th century America. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
