Wily Beguiled is a play written by John Webster, Thomas Dekker, and William Rowley, which was first performed in the early 17th century. This edition of the play was edited and adapted by Baldwin Maxwell and published in 1922. The play is a comedic satire that follows the story of two young men, Sebastian and Leander, who are in love with the same woman, Isabella. Isabella is a wealthy heiress who is courted by many suitors, including a wealthy merchant named Sir Francis Acton. However, Isabella is not interested in any of these suitors and instead falls in love with Sebastian. Leander, who is also in love with Isabella, becomes jealous and seeks revenge against Sebastian. The play is full of mistaken identities, disguises, and plot twists that keep the audience engaged until the very end. The themes of love, greed, and deception are explored throughout the play, making it a timeless classic that is still enjoyed by audiences today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
