Why is Sydney Crying? is a heartwarming and meaningful children's story about friendship, kindness, courage, and standing up against bullying. Written by Adela Villalpando, this touching book follows Sydney, a young first-grade student who begins her new school year feeling nervous and alone.
On her very first day of school, Sydney notices another little girl named Yolanda crying because she misses home. Although Sydney initially tries to be brave, she soon realizes she feels scared too. As the two girls begin talking and spending time together, they quickly form a special friendship that helps them feel less alone in their unfamiliar classroom.
However, their happiness is challenged when some classmates begin teasing and bullying them, calling them hurtful names and making fun of them for crying. The teasing grows worse over time, affecting Sydney and Yolanda emotionally and making school feel like an unsafe place. Eventually, Sydney's parents and teacher step in to address the bullying and teach the class an important lesson about empathy, respect, and kindness.
Through open discussion, encouragement, and teamwork, the students begin learning how their words and actions affect others. Together, the class creates a Happy List filled with positive ways students can support and encourage one another every day. What starts as a painful experience becomes an opportunity for growth, understanding, and friendship.
Filled with relatable emotions and valuable life lessons, Why is Sydney Crying? helps children understand the importance of compassion, inclusion, and speaking up when someone is being hurt. The story encourages young readers to be kind, supportive, and accepting of others while showing that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Written in a gentle and accessible style for young readers, this uplifting book is ideal for classrooms, parents, counselors, and educators seeking to teach children about emotional awareness, friendship, anti-bullying behavior, and the power of kindness.
