Through the 1880s and into the turn of the century, Elisabet and her family are living as early settlers in western Wisconsin. Her farm home, though isolated, looks out across the fields and hills to the Mississippi River.
This family saga is told by two women; mother and daughter. Our story is peopled by Elisabet and members of her family but centers on the troubled relationship she shares with her husband Heinrich. Events cause her to make major changes in her life and that of her young children. Farm life is demanding for her and further complicated by the few legal rights she has as a woman. The children grow older and think little about their younger days but they do carry memories of difficult times. Circumstances have hardened Elisabet and it is easier to not speak of the past ..... until her daughter Theresia has questions that aren't easily answered. As a young woman, Theresia is particularly curious and, at this point in the book, she discovers and relates the family story. Life moves on for the children but Elisabet remains at the farm becoming more estranged from them as the years pass. Elisabet, abandoned and lonely, uses her bitter-sweet memories to complete our story. Also in
