Mothers are often regarded as the best caregivers for their children. They embody patience, attentiveness, meticulousness, unconditional love, and tenderness. During and after the ten-year Rebel War led by Foday Sebanah Sankoh against the then government, as well as the two-year Ebola outbreak, many children were left orphaned-growing up without either a mother or a father. These children were either fostered by foreigners, NGOs, kinsmen, or philanthropists. However, the total care and nurturing that a biological mother provides were often lacking, prompting many of these children to ask, What is a mother? This question forms the foundation of the play, inspired by real-life experiences and inquiries directed at the author, who himself grew up without the loving care of a true mother.
This play is predominantly a non-fictional narrative that depicts the realities of Sierra Leonean communities, a small West African nation situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It sheds light on the increasing number of orphans and the true hardships they endure-whether as foster children or street kids. These children face discrimination, dehumanization, and neglect. Society often treats biological children as precious gems, while orphans receive only the remnants.
Les mères sont souvent considérées comme les meilleures dispensatrices de soins pour leurs enfants. Elles incarnent la patience, l'attention, la minutie, l'amour inconditionnel et la tendresse. Lors de la guerre civile de dix ans menée par Foday Sebanah Sankoh contre le gouvernement de l'époque, ainsi que lors de l'épidémie d'Ebola qui a duré deux ans, de nombreux enfants se sont retrouvés orphelins, grandissant sans l'amour d'une mère ni d'un père. La pièce
Cette pièce est principalement un récit non fictif qui illustre les réalités des communautés sierra-léonaises, un petit pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest bordant l'océan Atlantique. Elle met en lumière l'augmentation du nombre d'orphelins et les difficultés qu'ils affrontent, qu'ils soient recueillis par des familles d'accueil ou qu'ils vivent dans la rue. Ces enfants subissent des discriminations, des actes de déshumanisation et de négligence. La société traite souvent les enfants biologiques comme des trésors précieux, tandis que les orphelins ne reçoivent que des miettes.
