Was The Bible Made Up? Conversations with Sister Violet
Is an honest investigation into one of the most important questions a Christian or a skeptic can ask.
The question began with a simple encounter. While watching a video of a young preacher in Dublin, Alvin heard a woman challenge him with the words: The Bible. It's made up. She insisted that it had been written by the church long after Jesus walked the earth. The preacher answered by declaring that the Bible was the Word of God and quoting 2 Timothy 3:16.
But the encounter raised a larger question.
How do we know?
Can the Bible's reliability be established merely by quoting the Bible's own claims about itself? Or should those claims also be examined alongside history, archaeology, ancient manuscripts, inscriptions, Jewish and Roman writers, and the evidence surrounding the life of Jesus?
In this thoughtful and objective investigation, Alvin J. Thorne and Sister Violet refuse to begin with the assumption that every traditional explanation must be correct or that the Bible must automatically be false. Instead, they follow the example of the Bereans: listening carefully, examining the evidence, testing assumptions, and searching the Scriptures to determine what is true.
Together, they investigate questions such as:
Did real people write the Bible, or were its stories created centuries later?
Could the accounts of Moses, David, the prophets, and ancient Israel have been invented after the events they describe?
Were biblical stories borrowed from pagan myths and ancient legends?
Were prophecies written after the events they supposedly predicted?
How close were the Gospel writers to the life of Jesus?
Who decided which books belonged in the Bible and were other important books deliberately rejected?
Has the Bible been changed, corrupted, or rewritten through centuries of copying?
How did Jesus and the apostles themselves view Scripture?
Could the entire story of Jesus have been invented by later followers?
The investigation examines evidence from the biblical texts themselves alongside the wider historical world. Ancient inscriptions, archaeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, manuscript evidence, early Christian writings, and the testimony of writers such as Josephus, Tacitus, and Pliny the Younger all become part of the discussion. Yet the purpose is not to claim that every historical source proves every biblical event. The goal is more careful than that: to distinguish between what the evidence strongly supports, what remains uncertain, and where sincere scholars continue to disagree.
Sister Violet asks the questions many readers may have wondered privately:
How do we know that Moses really wrote the books attributed to him?
Who decided which books belonged in the Bible?
How do we know the manuscripts were not changed?
Why do scholars disagree?
And perhaps the most important question of all:
Can an ordinary reader examine the evidence and reach a reasonable conclusion?
This book does not promise that every question will disappear. It openly acknowledges manuscript variants, disputed dates, questions of authorship, differing interpretations, and areas where the historical evidence does not allow absolute certainty.
Difficult questions are not the same thing as evidence of invention.
Whether you are a Christian seeking a stronger foundation, someone struggling with doubts, or a skeptic wondering why intelligent people continue to take the Bible seriously, Was the Bible Made Up? invites you into the investigation.
