Was Christopher Columbus a Jew by Walter F. McEntire is a compelling historical investigation into one of the most enduring mysteries of the Age of Discovery: the true ethnic and religious origins of the man who bridged the Atlantic. This work explores the scholarly debate regarding the explorer's heritage, meticulously examining circumstantial evidence, historical records, and various theories suggesting that Columbus may have been of Jewish or Marrano descent.
The book delves into the cultural and political climate of 15th-century Spain, examining how the pressures of the Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews might have influenced Columbus's need for secrecy regarding his lineage. By analyzing the explorer's personal writings, his choice of associates, and the specific timing of his first voyage, McEntire provides a thoughtful analysis of the arguments for a Jewish identity. This text serves as a significant contribution to the historiography of Columbus, offering readers a deep dive into the genealogical puzzles and historical contexts that continue to fascinate researchers. It is an essential read for those interested in the complex intersections of identity, religion, and the history of global exploration.
