Wyandotte is a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1843. The story takes place in the 17th century and follows the life of a young man named Hard-Heart, who is a member of the Wyandot tribe. Hard-Heart is captured by the British during the French and Indian War and is taken to England as a prisoner. While in England, he meets and falls in love with a young woman named Gertrude. After being released from captivity, Hard-Heart returns to America and settles in the town of Wyandotte. There, he becomes embroiled in a conflict between the settlers and the Native Americans. The story explores themes of love, loyalty, and the clash of cultures between the Native Americans and the European settlers. Cooper's portrayal of Native American characters has been criticized for being stereotypical and romanticized.
