In World War II: The 103d Cactus Division Story, the reader travels alongside the American soldiers of the 103d Infantry Division as they fight their way across Europe during the closing months of World War II.
From southern France through fierce battles against German forces and ultimately into Austria, the men of the 103d Cactus Division endured combat, hardship, loss, and the constant uncertainty of war. Their story is one of courage, perseverance, and sacrifice.
The inspiration for this book came from an unexpected discovery.
Years after the war, while researching another book, Bunker Treasures, author djv murphy visited the Stadtbücherei Innsbruck in Austria seeking old maps showing abandoned World War II railroad lines. After hearing his request, the library director disappeared into the building's archives and returned carrying a worn and frayed volume bearing the distinctive insignia of the 103d Infantry Division-a green cactus against a blue field and yellow sky.
The book was Report After Action: The Story of the 103d Infantry Division, originally produced after the war by newspaper reporters and 103d Division members Ralph Mueller and Jerry Turk.
That remarkable discovery became the foundation for the story you are about to read.
World War II: The 103d Cactus Division Story brings to life the experiences of the soldiers who fought their way from Marseilles to Innsbruck, capturing both the brutality of combat and the determination of the men who continued forward until the war in Europe reached its end.
This book is dedicated to the brave soldiers of the 103d Infantry Division-to those who returned home, and especially to those who gave their lives along the long road to victory.
