Wrecks and Wreckers: A Tragedy and a Mystery is a book written by Sylvanus Pierson and published in 1899. The book is a historical account of the shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of New Jersey in the late 19th century, as well as the heroic efforts of the wreckers who tried to save the lives of those on board. The book is divided into two parts: the first part is a tragedy, and the second part is a mystery. The tragedy section of the book tells the story of the shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of New Jersey, including the wreck of the SS Oregon, which sank in 1886. The author describes the harrowing experiences of the passengers and crew who were on board the ships, as well as the efforts of the wreckers who tried to save them. The mystery section of the book delves into the question of why so many ships were wrecked off the coast of New Jersey during this time period. The author explores various theories, including the possibility of sabotage, and examines the evidence that supports each theory.Overall, Wrecks and Wreckers: A Tragedy and a Mystery is a fascinating historical account of the shipwrecks that occurred off the coast of New Jersey in the late 19th century. The book offers a unique perspective on the heroic efforts of the wreckers who risked their lives to save others, as well as the mysteries that still surround these tragic events. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
