At 2:30 a.m. on December 15, 1901, a four-masted barque stranded on the beach at Ocean City, New Jersey.

When federal lifesavers reached Sindia, the rolling ship made the breeches buoy unsafe. They changed methods and made eight surfboat trips to land twenty-six sailors. No one died. The ship was not so fortunate.

As wreckers fought to recover vessel and cargo, an extraordinary public story began to form. A surviving bill of lading documented 971 rolls of Japanese matting. Contemporary newspapers named porcelain, bamboo, camphor oil, silk, and figures described as Chinese gods. Later generations added gold, jewels, a Buddha, Boxer Rebellion loot, and a fortune still hidden beneath the sand.

The Wreck Beneath Ocean City follows Sindia from a Belfast shipyard and the long-distance economy of sail to rescue, salvage, litigation, preservation review, and a modern magnetic survey. Drawing on British Naval Court findings, United States Life-Saving Service records, ship registers, weather observations, cargo documents, maps, newspapers, and public archives, it tests each celebrated claim against the evidence that can actually support it.

The result is both maritime history and an investigation of how documented cargo became a treasure legend-and how a steel ship can disappear without being gone.
