The Wouldbegoods is E. Nesbit's lively and humorous tale of childhood misadventure and well-intentioned reform.
Presented as the retrospective account of Dora Bastable, the novel follows a group of siblings determined to become morally exemplary after encountering a book of improving stories. Their attempts at charity, enterprise, and ethical conduct, however, lead to a series of unintended disasters. Nesbit balances affectionate satire with genuine sympathy, capturing the earnest logic and imaginative improvisation of children at play.
A sequel to The Story of the Treasure Seekers, the novel continues the Bastable children's adventures with the same narrative wit and observational precision. Nesbit's restrained irony and conversational style helped shape modern children's literature, influencing later writers of domestic and fantastical fiction alike.
This SMK Books edition presents the complete, unabridged 1901 text.
