The Worth of a Man: Eight Days to Santiago follows Dakota Bellegarde, a displaced older software engineer whose life has been stripped down by automation, unemployment, divorce, aging, and shame. Once a respected professional and husband, Dakota now lives aboard an aging sailboat in North Carolina and drives prescriptions for low pay, carrying the quiet humiliation of a world that no longer seems to find him useful.
With two replaced knees and more doubt than faith, Dakota travels to Spain to ride an e-bike from León to Santiago de Compostela along the Camino de Santiago, then onward to Fisterra. He carries a stone from home, intending to leave his burden at the Cruz de Ferro, but the road does not offer him simple healing or easy answers.
Along the way, Dakota meets strangers who give him practices rather than solutions: how to sit still, how to question old verdicts, how to see labor and systems more clearly, how to accept help without shame, how to return to relationships, how to act without certainty, and how to stop measuring himself against machines. Each encounter loosens one piece of the identity he has been carrying: provider, failure, obsolete man, abandoned husband, useless worker.
By the time Dakota reaches Santiago, he is not transformed in any dramatic way. The cathedral receives him, but it does not explain him. He continues west to Fisterra, the old end of the world, where he discovers that not everything carried must be discarded. Some things must simply be carried differently.
In the end, Dakota is not cured, rescued, or restored to his old life. He is something more honest: ready to return. The road home becomes his true pilgrimage - a practice of repair, humility, resistance, connection, and ordinary human worth beyond usefulness.
