World's Best Show is the full making-of history of the most rewatched comedy in America, The Office: a fake documentary about a doomed branch of a dying paper business that almost no network would buy, that nearly died in its first thin spring, and that went on to outlive its own ending by becoming the place millions of people return to when they want to feel at home. It is the story of how a British masterpiece built to expose a sad man was carried across an ocean and rebuilt, against every reasonable prediction, into something its makers never set out to create.
At the center is one radical inversion. The documentary camera switched on in a borrowed London office had a single job, to catch a man being smaller than he believed himself to be and hold on his face until it hurt. Pointed at a new branch in a Valley warehouse, that same lens slowly, almost by accident, learned the opposite trick. It learned to forgive. This book traces that change through the near-cancellation year, the casting accidents that nearly handed America a colder, crueler boss, the glance to camera that turned a workplace comedy into a love story, the goodbye that scattered a cast, the two uncertain seasons that proved no one could replace the man at the heart of it, and the streaming afterlife that turned a canceled sitcom into a permanent fixture of ordinary nights.
