But a Circle made by breaking people is already broken.
Christopher refuses to become their ruler. The others must learn to survive without forcing anyone to become the same, without abandoning the frightened, and without letting fear choose who matters most. They need a Circle with no ruler, no child left behind, and an empty center that belongs to everyone.
The Chasm does not understand that kind of Circle.
It understands fear.
It knows how to make fear sound like wisdom. It knows how to make control feel responsible. It knows how to offer safety at the exact moment freedom feels most dangerous.
As the cave changes around them, the children change with it. Gravity shifts from wall to wall. Shadows behave as if they know what is coming. Bodies adapt to impossible places. Every strange new rule pushes them toward the same choice: surrender to the center, or trust one another enough to remain free.
Christopher's refusal does not free him from responsibility. Lena, Judy, Marcus, and the others each bring their own fears, strengths, and choices into the Circle. No single child can solve what is happening. No single child can hold everyone together. If they are going to survive, they will have to build something stronger than control.
They will have to belong without surrendering who they are.
Their first impossible night becomes the forgotten beginning of Aethralis, Alorea, and the worlds beyond.
