Ecclesiazusae, also known as Assemblywomen, is a comedic play by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. In this play, the women of Athens, led by Praxagora, disguise themselves as men and infiltrate the Assembly, where they vote to hand over the government to the women. Their plan is to implement a new form of communal living, where private property and traditional family structures are abolished in favor of shared resources and partners.
Aristophanes uses satire to explore themes of gender, power, and social reform. Ecclesiazusae presents a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on the political and social issues of ancient Athens. This edition offers readers a chance to engage with one of the most celebrated comedies of the classical world.
