In addition to being a celebrated poet, visual artist, and novelist in his native Italy, Tonino Guerra penned dozens of screenplays for many of the leading European auteurs who shaped 20th-century cinema: Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovsky, Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Francesco Rosi, Jacques Deray, and Theo Angelopoulos, among others. Guerra's extraordinary oeuvre, which includes the masterpieces L'avventura (1960), La notte (1961), L'eclisse (1962), Red Desert (1964), Blow-Up (1966), Amarcord (1973), Nostalghia (1983), and Eternity and a Day (1998), is beyond compare in the history of screenwriting. Even though Guerra's unique voice and lyricism defined the vanguard of arthouse cinema for decades, this book is the first to be dedicated to his matchless contribution to film. As such, The Works of Tonino Guerra is a major contribution to the study and histories of European cinema, screenwriting, and postwar Italian culture.

The chapters navigates Guerra's wide-ranging career in cinema, from his breakout films with Michelangelo Antonioni and their subsequent excursions to England and America, to his collaborations with other European masters including Andrei Tarkovsky, Federico Fellini, and Theo Angelopoulos. Although the focus is on Guerra's work as a screenwriter, many of the essays situate Guerra's films within his practice across artistic disciplines, including his acclaimed poetry, novels, and visual art. Further, The Works of Tonino Guerra examines a number of Guerra's unproduced-and unstudied-scenarios, in addition to his late intercultural collaborations with global filmmakers including Nacer Khemir (Tunisia) and Migel Littin (Chile).
