Etymology explains why muscle comes from the Latin word for little mouse, why salary traces back to salt, and why disaster breaks down into bad star. This guide teaches you to read that buried history in the words you already use every day.
The book follows English backward through time, starting with the written record and ending at a grassland language nobody ever wrote down. Every claim comes attached to a real example you can look up and check for yourself, and the writing is just as clear about the points where the evidence runs out.
Nine chapters trace the sources of English:
- What etymology actually is, how it differs from a dictionary definition, and how researchers date a word using old manuscripts and large collections of text
- Proto-Indo-European, the unwritten ancestor shared by English, Spanish, Hindi, Russian, Greek, and Persian, rebuilt by comparing the words its descendants still hold in common, plus Grimm's Law and the sound shift that turned Latin pater into father
- Latin in law, science, and the church, along with the prefixes and suffixes that let you decode unfamiliar terms on sight, and the Greek layer underneath most of the vocabulary of medicine and philosophy
- Greek compounding, the pattern behind photosynthesis
- The Germanic core: house, water, eat, sleep, friend, the short plain words a child learns first, and the Norse borrowings that arrived with Viking settlement
- 1066 and the arrival of French, which left the language with cow and beef, pig and pork, and a class divide you can still hear in any sentence you write
- Borrowings that came through trade and empire from Arabic, Sanskrit, Nahuatl, West African, and East Asian languages
- Broadening, narrowing, amelioration, and pejoration, the four patterns behind why awful once meant full of awe, and how new terms get made now by technology, brand names, and internet slang
No background in linguistics is required, and no second language either. Everything is explained in plain terms. This one is built for:
- Students and self-taught learners growing their vocabulary
- Writers, editors, and teachers who work with words daily
- Trivia players, crossword regulars, and dictionary readers
- Anyone who has stopped mid-sentence to wonder where a word came from
Each chapter closes with a discussion question, and worked answers to all nine sit in the back, next to a timeline that starts on the Pontic-Caspian steppe and ends in the present, a glossary of terms, and a reading list of the standard sources.
Learn a few hundred roots and affixes and thousands of words you've never met become readable on sight. That's the same method medical students and lawyers rely on, and it's available to anyone willing to learn the pieces. You also come away harder to trick, because many acronym origins aren't genuine and a too-neat story is almost always invented. Read this and ordinary language stops being background noise.
