The Word of Lalla the Prophetess is a book written by Richard Carnac Temple that explores the teachings and wisdom of Lalla, a 14th-century Kashmiri mystic and poet. Lalla, also known as Lal Ded, was a woman who defied social norms and left her family to pursue a spiritual path. Her poetry and teachings have been revered in Kashmir and beyond for centuries. In this book, Temple provides a translation and analysis of Lalla's poetry, which is full of metaphors, paradoxes, and insights into the nature of reality and the human condition. He also delves into Lalla's life story and the cultural and historical context in which she lived. The Word of Lalla the Prophetess is a valuable resource for anyone interested in mysticism, spirituality, and the literary traditions of South Asia. It offers a unique perspective on the role of women in religious and intellectual spheres and highlights the enduring relevance of Lalla's teachings in contemporary times.1924. This work contains the sayings of Lal Ded or Lal Diddi of Kashmir (Granny Lal), known also as Laleshwari, Lalla Yogishwari and Lalishri, between 1300 and 1400 AD. They are done into English verse from the Lalla-Vakyani or Lal-Wakhi and annotated. The authoress of the sayings, as a wandering ascetic and devoted follower of the Shaiva Yoga form of the religion of the Hindus, obtained such a hold on the people of the country that her verses have become a household word. Her songs illustrate her religion on its popular side, though they are not a systematic exposition of Shaivism on the lines laid down by the theologians who preceded her. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
