The history of woodcuts dates back over a thousand years. Traditionally, a skilled woodcut artist carefully carves a mirror image of a design onto wood or another suitable material. The design is then inked and pressed onto paper, allowing for the creation of multiple identical impressions. In this newly updated third edition of his popular handbook, Walker expands on the ancient printmaking technique known as mokuhanga (Japanese woodcut). Through a clear, step-by-step introduction to this water-based process, he demonstrates drawing, transferring, carving, and printing on washi paper. Easy-to-follow instructions, illustrated with photographs at each stage, guide beginners in creating a two-color print using this versatile technique.
This revised edition includes additional reproductions by master printmakers such as Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), and Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950).
