This volume features the memoirs of James Wood III (1927-2024) of Bedford, New York's Braewold Farm. Jim's writings tell of his almost eight decades living on the farm his ancestors first purchased in 1809, as well as his years following Braewold's sale in 2005. Jim describes his childhood, education, Navy service, career and investment endeavors, social and recreational activities, community involvement, and travels. His personal history and numerous colorful stories also feature his wife of seventy years, Twink, and two children, Emily and Steve. Life in the town of Bedford and environs during the Great Depression and World War II is discussed, and the book offers considerable detail as to the broad range of farming activities carried on at Braewold, beginning in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
Also included are short biographies of many of Jim's ancestors-leaders within their communities and their Quaker faith-as well as descriptions of the homes they built on and adjacent to Braewold Farm. These properties, collectively known as The Woodpile, are today designated as a landmark historic district.
The volume includes over 300 photographs and illustrations, which illuminate the Wood family's history and JIm's many tales. Appendices include the journals of the author's grandfather, James Wood II (1839-1925), who lived and farmed at Braewold over his entire lifetime.
