What if the warrior who changed the American West was a woman history deliberately erased?
For 150 years, the Battle of the Little Bighorn has been packaged as a tragedy of American courage, a noble last stand against overwhelming odds. It is a lie by omission. The village Custer attacked stretched three miles along the river and held up to ten thousand Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho people. The soldiers were outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outcommanded by a coalition of warriors that included women. In the thick of that fight rode Buffalo Calf Road Woman. She galloped through rifle fire to rescue her brother, and eight days later stood at the very center of the clash that toppled George Armstrong Custer. While hundreds of biographies turned Custer into a martyr, they erased her entirely, or reduced her to a slur, or dismissed the oral tradition as mere legend.
