Berlin, April 1945. A city in ruins. A woman's voice that history tried to silence.
As the Red Army storms Berlin in the largest urban battle of the Second World War since Stalingrad, a young woman finds herself trapped amid the ruins of a collapsing society. Her testimony reveals the largely silenced history of the mass violence inflicted on German women in the final weeks of the war.A Woman in Berlin 1945 is a physical theatre solo in the Lecoq tradition that weaves movement, Indian rhythms and dance into an emotionally powerful portrait of survival, dignity and historical memory.
THE STORYIn the cellars and queues of a starving city, a woman watches Berlin fall. When the soldiers arrive, survival becomes a daily negotiation: hiding, bargaining, and finally choosing one officer to protect her from all the others. Between the ruins of the present and memories of Paris before the war, she finds an unexpected mirror in Kali, the Indian goddess of destruction, and in Katya, a Russian female sniper whose path keeps crossing hers.
Women soldiers and women civilians. Both driven by the will to survive.UK PREMIERE & PRESS ACCLAIMOriginally created in German and toured extensively in Italy, A Woman in Berlin 1945 received its UK premiere in English at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2026, as part of the Teatro Fisico programme:
