With the Immortals is a novel by F. Marion Crawford that was first published in 1895. The story is set in Rome and follows the life of a young man named Paul Griggs, who is an aspiring artist. Paul is deeply in love with a beautiful woman named Hedwig von Rohnitz, but she is engaged to another man. Despite this, Paul continues to pursue her and eventually becomes involved in a strange and mystical world of immortals. As Paul delves deeper into this world, he discovers that the immortals are not what he thought they were. They are not gods or supernatural beings, but rather ordinary people who have discovered the secret to immortality. Paul becomes obsessed with the idea of immortality and begins to search for the secret himself. With the help of an immortal woman named Faustina, Paul learns the secret to immortality and becomes an immortal himself. However, he soon realizes that immortality comes at a price, and he must decide if he is willing to pay it.The novel explores themes of love, obsession, and the search for immortality. It is a thought-provoking and philosophical work that challenges readers to question their own beliefs about life and death.1888. With frontispiece. F. Marion Crawford was one of the more famous authors in the English-speaking world at the time of his death in 1909. He wrote over forty novels, most of which were in the style of disposable romances popular at the time. He also wrote stories of the horror and occult, which are generally the ones for which he is remembered today. With the Immortals begins: The southern shore of the Sorrentine peninsula offers a striking contrast to the northern side. Towards the north the mountain opens into a broad basis, filled to the brim with soft tufo rock, upon which the vegetation of ages has deposited a deep and fertile soil. The hills slope gently to the cliffs which overhang the bay of Naples and they seem to bear in their outstretched arms a rich offering of Nature's fairest gifts for the queen city of the south. The orange and the lemon, the live and the walnut elbow each other for a footing in the fat dark earth; and where there is not room for them, the holes and crannies of the walls shoot out streamers of roses and thrust forth nosegays of white-flowered myrtle.
