Many in the learned world have laboured on the enquiry concerning the soul; but forasmuch as they knew nothing of the spiritual world, and of the state of man after death, they could not do otherwise than construct hypotheses, not of the nature of the soul, but of its operation upon the body: of the nature of the soul, they could not have any other idea, than as of some pure principle in eether, and of its continent than as of aether; on this subject however they durst not publish much, lest they should attribute any thing natural to the soul, knowing that the soul is spiritual. Now forasmuch as they had such a conception of the soul, and nevertheless it was known to them that the'soul operates upon the body, and produces all things in it, which have relation to its sense and motion; therefore they laboured, as was observed on the enquiry concerning the operation of the soul upon the body, which some said was effected by influx, and some by harmony: but forasmuch as by this means nothing was discovered, in which the mind, Which is desirous to see the ground of things, can ..
