Told through dated diary entries, The Winter Journal follows one year in the life of an ordinary line infantry soldier as industrial warfare reshapes Europe. Tom and his section are not heroes or generals. They are men tasked with keeping the trains running and the corridors clear.
As refugee traffic swells and military assets must pass at any cost, Tom faces choices that do not fit neatly into right or wrong:
Clear the road or save the crowd. Follow orders or follow conscience. Prevent chaos or become part of it.
When a civilian crush turns deadly during a forced clearance, Tom must confront a truth far colder than winter:
Obedience is not neutral.
