Born in Richmond during the final year of the Civil War, Varina Anne Winnie Davis entered the world carrying a name that would shape nearly every part of her life.
As the youngest daughter of Confederate president Jefferson Davis and Varina Howell Davis, Winnie grew up amid defeat, imprisonment, exile, and the lingering divisions of a nation struggling to heal. Later celebrated throughout the South as the Daughter of the Confederacy, she became a public symbol before she had the freedom to decide who she wanted to be.
Behind the ceremonies and expectations was an intelligent young woman who dreamed of independence, literary success, and a life beyond her father's shadow. Her controversial romance with Northerner Alfred Wilkinson forced Winnie to choose between personal happiness and the demands of family, tradition, and public loyalty.
