Excerpt: The Cassiopeia BE-300 Pocket Manager was a personal digital assistant manufactured by Casio Computer Co. Ltd and first released June 25, 2001. In Japan, it was also marketed as BE-500. The Cassiopeia BE-300 used a cut-down version of Windows CE 3.0 that was not fully compatible with Windows CE applications. It featured a 65 million color 320x240 touch-screen LCD, a 166 MHz MIPS CPU, and 16 MB of RAM. It was also equipped with a CompactFlash slot, allowing for the expansion of internal memory with external flash memory cards as well as the use of peripheral CF-compatible devices such as wireless and network adapters. Almost immediately, though, problems were encountered. Casio's proprietary formatting and slimmed down OS severely limited the device. Compatible applications and programs were scarce and Casio didn't follow through with the promised support, drivers, and MYCasio website. Such was the outcry over the misleading WinCE3.0 that Casio even posted an apology on its website for a time. At first owners of this new color PDA would complain and post troubles on various forums and websites. Then the Brighthand forums devoted a section to the BE-300 and the community was born. Soon knowledgeable owners, able to see the potential of the unit's hardware, began to fiddle and tweak, tickle and poke, at both the OS and hardware.
