Departing Boston for Melbourne, he crossed the Atlantic and Indian Oceans via the Cape of Good Hope, weathering calms, shifting winds, and a violent hurricane that left many ships damaged or destroyed. He records life aboard the square-rigged vessel with clarity and dry humor, observing the work of the crew, the structure of the ship, and the changing moods of the sea.
