This thesis explores three self-portraits by William Hogarth, with particular attention paid to The Painter and his Pug (1745). Through his self-portraits, Hogarth pointed to the foundations of his artistic philosophy and revealed his evolving artistic and social identities, as both painter and gentleman. This thesis argues that Unknown man, perhaps of the Coxe Family (1741, Dulwich Picture Gallery) may well be a fourth self-portrait and perhaps a pendant to a portrait of his wife Jane. If so, it is one in which the painter confidently portrayed himself as a gentleman, without any artistic accoutrements, in a manner that was new, but consistent with the evolving social persona appearing in the three known self-portraits.
