William Henry Fry is a biography of the first native-born American composer of grand opera. Fry (1813-1864) was a complex figure, working as a journalist and music critic while striving to establish a distinctly American operatic tradition. This book explores Fry's life, his compositions (including the opera Leonora), and his influential writings on music.
Upton provides a detailed account of Fry's career, shedding light on the challenges faced by American artists in the 19th century. This biography offers valuable insights into the development of classical music in the United States and the cultural landscape in which Fry operated.
