The Wibelungen is an epic poem written by the German composer and playwright, Richard Wagner. This work is based on the ancient Germanic legend of the Nibelungenlied, which tells the story of the hero Siegfried, his love for the warrior princess Kriemhild, and the tragic events that unfold when Siegfried is betrayed and killed by his own comrades. Wagner's version of the story is divided into four operas, collectively known as the Ring Cycle. The first opera, Das Rheingold, introduces the magical ring that grants its bearer unlimited power and wealth, and the curse that befalls anyone who possesses it. The second opera, Die Walkre, tells the story of Siegfried's parents, the god Wotan and the mortal woman Fricka, and the forbidden love between Siegfried and his twin sister, Sieglinde. The third opera, Siegfried, follows the adventures of the young hero as he slays the dragon Fafner and claims the ring for himself. In the fourth and final opera, Gtterdmmerung, the consequences of Siegfried's actions come to a head as Kriemhild seeks revenge for his death, leading to the destruction of the gods and the downfall of the world as they know it. Wagner's epic work is known for its complex and innovative music, as well as its themes of love, power, and redemption. It has been widely performed and adapted in various forms, including film, television, and literature. The World-ruler recognised from whence his deepest wound had come, and who it was that cried his world-plan final halt. It was the spirit of free Manhood loosed from the nature-soil of race, that had faced him in this Lombard Bond. He made short work of both the older foes: to the High-priest he gave his hand, --he fell with crushing force upon the selfish Guelphs; and so, once more arrived at summit of his power and undisputed might, --he spake the Lombards free, and struck with them a lasting peace. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
