Why My Sister? is her memoir and it is a sweeping family saga that spans three generations and two nations. It is the story of a family that lives across two languages, two cultures, and across two registers of the mind, the one we call well and the one we call ill. In a parallel thread, the book follows Tom and Maria, whose own inheritance of trauma, untreated bipolar disorder, and silence around suffering will merge with the Walss lineage when their son Dan marries Eugenia's daughter Chelo. That is where the book becomes universal. Every family has its hidden traumas. Every family has its question no one is allowed to ask out loud. This book asks it.
Walss-Bass writes in two strands. The memoir itself, narrated in the third person, reconstructs the family's experience with unflinching intimacy. Interwoven with the narrative, set in a distinct typeface, are passages of scientific exposition that explain the genetics, epigenetics, and neurobiology of schizophrenia in language any reader can follow. From her family's story, Dr. Walss-Bass provides a clear and humane look into psychiatric illness, covering gene-environment interactions, the history of deinstitutionalization, the promise and the limits of current treatments, and the frontier of brain organoid research.
This is not a story that promises a cure, or an easy reconciliation.
