THE HENRY NOWAK CASE

How did the dying victim become the first suspect?

That is the question at the heart of this thought-provoking first issue of the Lens & Mood - Brief Essays series.

The murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who was fatally stabbed in Southampton on 3 December 2025, shocked Britain. Yet for many people, what proved even more disturbing than the attack itself was the police bodycam footage. When officers arrived, they first spoke to Vickrum Digwa and members of his family, who falsely accused Henry of launching a racist and physical attack. They then directed officers to Nowak, who was lying on the ground just a few metres away, repeatedly telling them he had been stabbed and could not breathe. Instead of being treated as the victim, he was handcuffed and cautioned as he lay dying. For many, the false race allegations-what many saw as an attempt to play the race card while Henry lay dying-compounded an already unimaginable tragedy and became central to the public outrage that followed.
