Every other book on this shelf models the feeling. None of them says what an apology is actually made of - which is why the fast one, said at the ceiling, leaves everybody crosser than they started.
So this book takes one apart. It turns out to have parts, and they are not equal.
- Say what you did. Not it fell. Not sorry if you're upset - a sentence that quietly blames them for being upset, and everybody hears it.
- Say it was you. Of all six components researchers tested across 755 people, this one rated most effective. It is the part that does the work.
- And then stop - because there is one word that cancels an apology the moment it arrives, and it is but.
- Say what happens next, and offer to put it right - the only part you can do rather than say.
- Will you forgive me? rated least important of all six. Forgiving is theirs to give, not yours to collect.
It also says what to do when you are not sorry yet, because sometimes you are not - and pretending goes backwards. Children as young as four can tell a forced apology from a real one, and the person who receives a forced one ends up feeling worse than if you had said nothing at all.
Importantly, this book does not tell grown-ups to stop asking. In the research, a prompted-but-willing apology landed about as well as a spontaneous one. Being reminded is fine. Being squeezed is not. That distinction is the whole book.
