That's a profound question -- and one at the heart of meaningful mathematics.
Understanding why a math question exists is generally more important in the long run than just calculating the answer. Here's why:
1. Deeper Understanding
Knowing the why reveals the purpose, context, and structure behind the problem. This leads to insight, not just accuracy.
2. Transferable Knowledge
When you understand the reason for a question, you can apply similar reasoning to new, unfamiliar problems. Pure calculation often doesn't transfer well.
3. Mathematical Discovery
Mathematics evolves from curiosity: Why does this pattern hold? What happens if...? Calculations are tools in this journey, not the journey itself.
4. Engagement and Joy
Understanding gives meaning. It's the difference between memorizing a melody and composing your own music.
That said, calculating correctly is still essential -- it grounds abstract thinking in precision. But without the why, it's like building a house without knowing its purpose.
