The Whole Book Of Psalms, originally published in 1695, is a valuable historical resource for the study of early English church music and religious practice. This edition, compiled by John Playford, contains not only the Psalms themselves but also a collection of usual hymns and spiritual songs, providing a comprehensive overview of the musical repertoire used in churches of the period.
Included are the ancient and proper tunes traditionally associated with the Psalms, alongside some melodies of later use, offering insight into the evolving musical tastes of the time. This book provides a unique glimpse into the intersection of music, religion, and community life in the late 17th century, appealing to scholars of music history, religious studies, and cultural history alike. This enduring collection represents a significant contribution to the understanding of sacred music and its role in shaping religious experience.
