What makes this novel irresistible is not the easy promise of answering who wrote Don Quixote, but the suspicion that the question itself was always wrongly framed.

An entire pedagogy of literature trembles with it: the ease with which we accept consecrated versions, the idea of the author as a transparent, clean, isolated figure, and, above all, our trust in those who administered, for centuries, the story of that origin.
In the end, the most unsettling question will not be whether the note is authentic, though everything begins there. Nor will it be whether there was another author, or several, hidden behind the name of Cervantes.
